In the final workshop of term, we had to do a classic ArtfulScribe Bake Off!
For the Signature Challenge, the young writers had to write a description or descriptive poem about Spring, but with their own twist/personal angle!
Neelesh:
I don't really like spring and to be honest, I prefer winter more. While spring brings warmer weather, more sunlight, and colourful flowers, it could also bring high pollen counts that cause allergic symptoms like fever, red eyes and sneezing. However in winter, there is a chance of snowing which could mean that schools might be closed. Also, my birthday is in winter. These are my only two reasonable answers to say why I like winter more than spring.
Leo:
From your air flowers spring,
From you seeds plants sing,
Hatchlings see and spread their wings,
Free from their eggs: shellish-things.
Around and around I spin
And surround myself,
With birds and bees and
Happy little deers,
Daffodils and dandelions
So many;
So many such marvelous things.
For the Technical Challenge, the young writers had to create their own Spring themed haiku! There were some very impressive, well-crafted haiku, especially within the time constraints!
Safir:
The flamboyant plants
Strengthen their silky petals
And wake up again
Liberty:
You won’t see me cry
when spring finally dies; I’ll
see it in your eyes
Leo:
Trees’ leaves in the wind
which blows away cold winter
as colours blossom
Finally, for the Showstopper, the young writers had to write a flash fiction on the theme of The Lost Hour (the hour change for the end of Daylight Saving Time which happened last weekend!) This could be any genre – e.g. for an adventure story, perhaps the hero loses one hour to save the world, or for a romance, the lovers have one less hour to spend together… There were some brilliant, and hilarious, responses!
Safir:
I checked my phone. I screamed. “ONE HOUR GONE, ALL GONE!”. The world was about to end. I WAS AN HOUR LATE TO HAVE BREAKFAST! I was about to explode. I could feel my liver self-destructing, my stomach eating itself because of how hungry it is. This was the end, the clock was ticking. If I didn’t have food in the next minute, I would die. I quickly dashed to the kitchen, jumping over all of my brother's toys. AAAHHHHH, I STEPPED ON HIS METAL CAR. I didn’t let that stop me. Half dying I lunged into the kitchen. Slamming the fridge open and saving my food deprived body.
Leo:
A swish of a tail,
A blow of a blowhole
Of a blue whale,
Without fail.
A flicker of light,
A telling growl
And a grizzly bear bite,
All through the night.
A snore,
A wave crashing
On a shore,
There's more.
It will happen,
All the time:
Dawn, noon, dusk and night.
Whether the clocks change or not
Neelesh:
I was playing video-games and when I checked my phone, it was 1 AM!! There was no way time went so fast. " Am I hallucinating or is this a dream?" I thought. Then I realized that it was Daylight saving Time. How silly of me to think stupid thoughts?
