Projected self

This Tuesday’s session of Writing for Stage began with the prompt to:

Freewrite dialogue based on one of the images of characters arguing (see below).

We then read an extract of YEN by Anna Jordan.

Next, we were asked to pick a character we'd already written this term and bullet point 3 things about themselves they want the world to see, and 3 they want to hide.

The activity was then to write a scene which begins with the character being their projected self, with their true self seeping in gradually throughout. (Choose a situation in which their secret side would come to the fore, however much they try to maintain the image of their projected self. Advice – Write three lines of dialogue, then a stage direction. To keep the world active.)

Finally, we rewrote our scene with only 10 lines of dialogue (the rest being action).
