Map Making

This week in Mayflower Creative Writers, Holly planned a perfect follow-up session to our previous three-part structured extravaganza, which was welcomed by the group who had just started their A-level mocks.

To get us started, Holly asked us to consider the characters in our stories, and where they would populate the majority of the map. As each writer had a different genre, the populated areas differed from a castle where the Prince was to begin courting to the deep depths of hell.

Once we’d understood where the most important places would be on our maps, Holly handed everyone an A3 piece of paper, which each person scattered rice onto. If we were happy with where our rice landed on the paper, we could begin drawing the outline of our map. However, for those who wanted a slightly different shape, they could shake their map from side to side.

Some maps had islands, others had mountain ranges, and all had thoughtfully embroidered compasses.

Once the outlines were completed, the group had the opportunity to start creating a key, of either landmarks or characters who would frequent a certain region.

This session was an enjoyable and useful one. With a broader understanding of the world where their novels are set, the group are one step closer to understanding the many different layers which constitute a novel.
