Flash Fiction

FLASH FICTION

(Saying a lot without writing a lot)

Today our young writers focused on flash fiction. Our writers are often working on longer projects and novels, so today was a chance to think outside the box and try something new.

We started by looking at the 5 S’s of flash fiction: Setting, Situation, Sensory Detail, Simile (or metaphor) and shifts.

Focusing our first writing exercise on the small room we were in, everyone began to write their first piece of flash fiction being as specific but creative and surreal as possible. You can see some of their incredible work below.

Since Flash Fiction is very sensory we looked at some examples of surreal flash fiction by Stephanie Devine. The stories we looked at were ‘Fish-Eye’ and Skin Suit. We talked about how you could vividly see every image she was creating. In a similar way to the ‘telepathy’ between writer and reader that Stephen King had written in a piece we’d read earlier this term.


Our older group, although still writing some flash fiction, also had an extra task this week. A pitch! Over the last week the 15-18 group had been tasked with either choosing one of their pre existing ideas or coming up with a new one to talk about in front of the group. It was lovely to hear everyone so enthusiastic about each others styles and potential new writing and it was great to hear some of the ideas could potentially be scripts after our last two weeks of script writing.

We are looking forward to seeing some of these ideas develop and will be looking out for the 5 s’s in our young writers future work.
