Boxes

Today, the groups were in a temporary home in the Mayflower Theatre. They were excited to be in the executive suite with a large table and sofas.

Today’s topic was ‘Boxes’, and Ali started the session by playing a musical box and inviting the writers to get inside the head of the ballerina. They did an excellent job imagining her thoughts, with many exploring the idea that she used to be real or felt uncomfortable when people looked at her.

Ballot boxes are another important type of box as the general election approaches. The writers had to think of three things they were good at that could be a reason for someone to vote for them. They could also think of how they might improve or change things.

Common themes were free doughnuts, improved school experiences, and caring for nature. Playing with their new sense of power, some also thought of removing mud, puddles, road works and bird poop; reintroducing dodos; and shipping all elderly people (that is, anyone over 55) to the Isle of Wight.

We thought about the power of persuasive writing and the political techniques used to gain votes. Everyone filled in their ballot paper, and each session had a clear winner.

Ali had created a story sheet to practice dialogue. The writers applied their own creative touches to the stories, introducing sea monsters, unicorns, and cartwheeling crocodiles.

There was just about time for a quick round of Consequences, which is always a light-hearted way to finish the session.
