Junior & Young Writers: Week 2 - Alien Invasion (sci-fi)

Hi Writers,

This week, our writers tried out some sci-fi-themed writing! Inspired by a real Hampshire UFO sighting, both the Junior and Young Writers groups explored what happens when the new forest is invaded by aliens…

Check-In: How Was Your Week… as a Meal?
We began with a check-in where writers described their week using food metaphors.

  • Junior group: One week felt like a macaroon—boring to make but worth it. Another was an upside-down cake that teleports you to another dimension if cooked wrong!
  • Young Writers: Some examples included spaghetti with a fire alarm blaring or microwave mash from a soggy box.

Prompt: Something Strange in the Sky…
Using a real article about a local UFO sighting, we asked:

  • What is the object?
  • Where did it come from—and why?
  • Is it alien tech? A future machine?
  • Who (or what) is on board?
  • Where did it go? Did it land?
  • Is the UFO from the future or the past?
  • Why is it here?
  • What is their home planet like?
  • And what happens next?

Junior Writers
The group explored alien encounters with imagination and curiosity:

  • Anna imagined an intergalactic wedding, complete with alien customs.
  • Eddie wrote two letters—one from aliens, one from humans.
  • Juno told the tale of a space-travelling sausage in search of a plate.
  • Henry crafted a warning about highly advanced, hostile beings.

Next, they imagined the New Forest after an alien invasion, with detailed maps and stories from the aftermath:

  • Evan described The Doom Forest, corrupted by alien life, set ten years after the initial invasion.
  • Eddie gave us a survivor’s account from an alien camp.
  • Anna documented the invasion in journal form.

Young Writers
The older group launched their stories by using two randomly picked letters from the banana bag and creating potential title lists starting with those letters. The results were:

  • CatherineHaunted Anchovy
  • SonnyHorrifying Arachnids
  • LeoAK47 Hurt
  • PoppyAriana Grande Hops
  • BerryHangry Apple
  • GeorgieHurt Avocado Aaron

After creating their post-invasion map, the stories continued:

  • Georgie: A major twist—it was Just Gary, not aliens at all.
  • Sonny: A space pie that excretes space custard.
  • Catherine: A human-occupied, dwarf-legged war octopus.
  • Leo: Saudi flying tanks.
  • Daisy: An alien news report on a failed stealth craft.
  • Poppy: Sabrina Carpenter becomes Queen of the Aliens.

From flying sausages to hostile encounters, the groups travelled beyond the stars with their imaginations this week.
Next week, we return to Earth... or do we?
