Autumn Term & Soundscapes

We’re back! Autumn term is in full swing and we began as we meant to go on: with fill-in fun! Our noisy prompt saw our protagonists finding strange new humans in Sainsbury’s, releasing bees from the floorboards, and battling the dreaded dust ‘specknado’.


Ali then got us to answer three questions:


  1. What is the happiest sound?

  2. What is the most terrifying sound you have ever heard?

  3. What is your signature noise?


Our happy sounds included: grandparent voices, a cat miaowing, and the school-bell after double French. Terrifying ones included hoovers, screaming, and other cringe-inducing things like nails on dry pottery. Signature noises tended to be little words or phrases which our writers noticed seeping into their everyday lexicons.


Ali then got us to create a piece focussed around foley work. We started with writing about the slow ticking of a metronome, then a thunder-maker, then nails on cardboard, then a dog toy squeaker, and finally a music box.


Our writers gave us stories of detectives in fields being startled by moving statues and dogs who ate all of the noise-making objects, but our writer of the week was Katie with her stressed-out narrator keenly aware of all the sounds during a difficult exam!
