Top of the Pops

It’s our final term before the summer, and today we’re looking back… way back! Ali had our writers look at some songs that were in the charts fifty years ago: Leader of the Pack, Midnight Train to Georgia, and Jolene. Each of those songs had a story in them and Ali wanted our group to come up with more background about those stories (“sleeve notes” if you will). Alternatively, our writers could write an answer track to the singer - for example, what does Jolene have to say back to Dolly?

Two of our writers worked together to give us context behind Jolene: Jolene is, in fact, a cat that the singer’s partner is paying too much attention to, and the answer track had four meows as the refrain as the cat asked just to be fed. We also had Leader of the Pack be about a girl who was actually in love with the motorbike her supposed beau was riding on, and was only dating him to get to it.

We then did a round of Frankenstory using the first lines of the songs as a jumping off point. The stories devolved into discussions of a time traveller’s LA-overexposure and a stalker watching the object of his desire in her apartment, but Ali’s favourite was the one about a girl refusing to accept her boyfriend was three people stacked on top of each other (picture of the story attached below!)
