Today we were talking about sound effects and how essential they are for radio plays! We listened to a five minute extract of Cabin Pressure and had our writers list the ones they heard (such as a whistle, air pressure release, splashing).

Ali then gave out a variety of noisemakers and, one terrible din later, asked our writers to create a script with sound effects. We had such excellent stories as:

  • Rubber duck for squeaky clown shoes, whose owner was interviewing as an electrician

  • Rustling empty dorito packet for a fried food order, and scrunching it up hard for the sound of a deep fat frier

  • Metronome as a dripping tap/pipe (which the main character’s cousin couldn’t fix as he’d been murdered)

  • Stapler as a scene clapper board

Ali got our writers to hang onto their sound effects and use them to answer the question, “who are you and what are you doing here?” which we recorded and listened back to. We got an incredible cast of characters, including:

  • Guy who staples the company’s lawsuit documents together

  • Woman who’s playing recorder (badly) as recommended by her therapist to cope with her looming death

  • Someone obsessed with playing whistles and rhyming

  • A dog trainer desperate to find a dog to train

Our writer of the week was Rowan due to his exceptional use of a metronome!
