Junior & Young Writers Week 2: The Magic of Stories

Using the beautifully illustrated story cards that both Claire and I are eternally grateful to Sonny for gifting to the group, we dove into a world of magical storytelling.

For our main exercise, each person chose one card from the collection to inspire the beginning of a story. A second card was then selected to help shape the middle, often prompting some kind of action or conflict. Finally, a third card was chosen to bring the story to its conclusion.

With all three cards laid out to create a connected narrative, we ended up with some wonderfully whimsical and imaginative results.

*Grandpa Pepper Moon fell to Earth, landing in a river where an eagle directed him to an enchantress who could help him return home. The enchantress, wise as she was, simply shot Grandpa Pepper Moon out of a cannon and back into space.

*Bagel the Beagle, sniffing around in the garden, dug up a shiny silver key that fit perfectly into a rusted old lock. Beyond it lay a magical realm filled with magnificent creatures, including a “bird with a king’s head.”

*A labyrinth filled with dead souls trapped within the bushes hid the Eternal Flame deep inside. Exploring further, Bob discovered the Charm of Finding, which finally allowed him to locate the exit.

*The Emperor’s cat, searching the castle for food, stumbled upon the Charm of Healing — an object possessing “such great power it corrupts even the loyalest of soldiers.”

Lastly, working in pairs, the groups drew scenes inspired only by the writing on the back of the story cards, leading to plenty of creative and unexpected interpretations.
