Portal: Two Approaches to Liminal Spaces and Doorways

Summer 2026, PORTAL:

In our Writing for Page and Stage group we tend to alternate between craft-based sessions, where we hone a writing skill, and freewriting sessions, where we let our imaginations run free!

In this session, we worked with a freewriting prompt of a portal. We explored two exercises: one that lent itself towards magical realism, the surreal, sci-fi or more fantastical writing. For the second, we kept the remit fairly tight in order to keep the scene more rooted in character and reality.

To start with, we spent time naming as many different types of portals we could, that we felt could function as doorways to other realms, secret passageways, gates to other galaxies, blackholes that take us across time.

Themes arose: the unknown, accidental or inevitable discoveries; conscious choices that required courage, clues and talismans, phrases or costumes that acted as portals… We observed that whether the 'passing through' a doorway is reversible, or not, affects the dramatic stakes of a story. The group observed that stories are portals, as readers we are transported into the world of the book we are reading!

Sharing these ideas together served as good ground for everyone to write their own pieces – and what a range we had! What portals might your character step through and what realm might they enter through the portal?

In the second part of the session we simplified the premise: a character walks through a real doorway and, in some way, are transformed by the experience whether in character, clothing, wellbeing etc. The key was to keep it rooted in reality, in order to hone our skills of character-work and description. This meant someone could simply enter a room and change into clothes for the night. Or someone could enter a room and the atmosphere changes, or they receive bad news, or brilliant news. What scenarios would you add to this? Have you ever entered a room in one state and been changed in some way, before you left again? Perhaps you might write about that…
