Historical Fiction

Ali was off sick this week, so the lovely Harley stepped in to lead the session.

This week, we focused on writing historical fiction, highlighting an opportunity to enter the Young Walter Scott Prize for historical writing.

We started the session by warming up with a Frankenstein story: a piece of paper is passed around, and each person writes a sentence. They then fold over the piece of paper so that the next writer is unaware of what was written. Please take a look at the photos to see how they turned out! The Frankestory, of course, had to be grounded in Tudor England.

We then focused on how to ground a piece of historical writing by using a memorable date from history, for this, we used some famous dates like:

The death of Princess Diana

9/11

The moon landing

Spanish flu

We each chose one date to focus on, and we wrote for twenty minutes. This led us to explore the events in sublime fictional detail, four stories were different takes on the moon landing, including the wife of Buzz Aldrin and her side of the famous moon landing, and a feverish therapy session. The daughter of Princess Diana's taxi driver, and how the sudden death disrupted her holiday, and much more.

It was lovely to assist Harley in this session. I was completely inspired and impressed by the talent!
