The End! (Of Term, Anyway)

Today was the end of term, and Ali came with some fun prompts for us to celebrate!

Firstly she once again retrieved the box of wonder (including its famous musical sting) in which was written names of famous literary characters. The writers had to choose one of these each and, in pairs, write what an interaction between these characters would look like.

We had:

Frodo Baggins & Elizabeth Bennet (with Frodo coveting Elizabeth’s engagement ring)

Sherlock Holmes & Willy Wonka (where Holmes was investigating the violence towards children that had taken place at the factory)

Thomas the Tank Engine & Alice in Wonderland (in which the pair ate canapés and danced)

Ali then discussed writing endings, and how we as writers love to create a beginning but don’t always know how to finish a piece. Our writers were given a setup sentence and then asked to end the story, and we were given exciting finales like the end of a journey across the underworld, the inevitability of death, and a bittersweet marriage.

Finally, with not enough time to return to our Frankenstories from earlier in term, instead we wrote Frankensentences (one person wrote the start and someone else wrote the end!) here are a couple of examples of what our writers came up with:

“She kept running, her legs threatening to buckle under her own weight, but she had to escape the force of all the events that had happened - it finally caught up to her. Her best friend was dead and she was the reason why.”

“I was still, annoyingly, in jail, but… at least I had fixed the radio that was all these philistines provided me with. Now if only I could find a station that wasn’t playing Ed Sheeran…”

“They were probably, quite possibly, most certainly going to die, but Ruby’s favourite book characters all did too, so it was of no consequence really.”
