Welcome back to another term of the Afterschool Club! This week, as we're heading back to school (or home school, or even start of uni for some!) we started by sharing our favourite things we did this summer holiday, before thinking about all the books, films and TV shows which have a school as their setting - everything from Matilda to Grange Hill, The Worst Witch, The Sarah Jane Adventures, Horrid Henry - and Harry Potter, of course!
Next, we read extracts from Harry Potter, The Worst Witch and the Demon Headmaster, about characters arriving at new (and strange!) schools for the first time, exploring the descriptions of setting and character.
Inspired by this, the young writers designed their own schools, considering:
Where is it?
What does it look like on the outside?
What does it look like on the inside?
How big is it?
Who attend it? Boys/girls/creatures/what age? Only people with magic? How do
you get in?
What is taught at the school?
What’s the headmaster/headmistress like?
Other important teachers?
Next, they turned this into the opening of a story, where a character arrived at the school for the first time.
From Neelesh:
For most people schools are bad but this school is even
worse. All of the most deadliest young criminals across the UK get dumped to
this school and it's located in Scotland. However, the problem is that, I
didn't even do anything wrong( except for doing a false fire alarm which
created a chaos ). The best thing about this school is nothing. If you survived
for a day, you could call yourself lucky. The thing that surprises me is that
why don't the government just put us in juvie? Atleast, that's way easier than
being locked up in here. While, all of us were having our lunch, the headmaster
said to line up. Suddenly, all the other 'students' started to get controlled
by him( except for me). "Mwaa, Haha, I have started to control them and a
month later I will control the whole UK,and no- one can stop me!'' he said.
Well, I have to get out this place soon because they forgot to implant the
injection on me,but if I can just stop this evil headmaster from taking over, I
might be granted a prize from the government. The whole world is relying on me
right now and if I can stop him, this can be my FIRST mission ever. Maybe I can
also get a medal of honour. Over and out!
From Zoe:
Ellen woke up to the sound of her alarm clock. She looked
around thinking where she was, then she remembered – she was in here new house
in Wales, and this was her alarm clock to remind her it was her first day at
Ysgol Rhys Prichard. She got up and got dressed. She went downstairs and
collected her bag, then Ellen went out and hoped on her bike to start her
1-hour trip to school as she lived on the east side of Llyn Brianne.
From Safir:
Soggyboars School of magic was one of the normal type of
schools. The reviews weren’t amazing as there were major incidents which
happened in it. All the incidents were because of one teen, Voldy. He was a
silent but evil minded student, now in custody. One of his incidents happened
like this:
“Ok class! Shut up and wands out!” It was a defence against
boring teachers lesson, their most hated teacher, snivellus snake.
“Today, if anyone talks over me, I will use the curses I
will show you today on them. Now, we will look at a defensive curse. Say
‘Avkada Kadava!’” All of the pupils said it right, but Voldy was off.
“Avada Kedavra!” he screamed pointing at the teacher. He
looked at his dead teachers body lying on the floor and fainted. The next thing
he new was that the room he was in had bars in.
From Gene:
Ugh look at your school it will never compare to mine,
in my
school you actually want to go there it is paridise! Everything is just fine.
Of course no school in the world is like this so how is mine so great,
Well if
we zoom 1000 years from now you’ll wish you wanna go here mate.
Instead of your
puny little schools dotted around the country, mine is a massive 1000km wide
quarters,
Its extraordinary!!! Each subject located in a block 250km in height,
seems pretty big but I see it as more spacious no need for a fright.
Arts
English Humanities Tech Science Maths,
MFL P.E Knowledge and plenty more my
favourite is recess.
So I say stop gloating about your school its not as good
as mine,
but be hopeful more the future cut everything will be just fine.
