Stories From Our Streets Connecting with Elders with Abbeyfield Wessex and Reminiscence Groups

Washing day was Monday – for the whole street! Milk was kept cool in bottles on the stone

floor. People washed their clothes by hand and manual labour. Ladies had one good dress

and gloves for tea dances and Sundays, suits for the men. There was less traffic, more neighbourly conversation. Once, when the circus came to town, the elephants paraded through Poole high street.

These were just some of the memories shared by those attending the Reminiscence group

at Poole library and in the communal conversations at various Abbeyfield Wessex centres.

The Stories From Our Streets team thoroughly enjoyed listening to some of the elders from

our local BCP community. It was fascinating to hear about the area in the past, from Poole

zoo to Bournemouth’s old bus station.

The conversations also touched upon what life was like for these elders now, what they

thought of the area today and what they felt was important in life.

We felt very lucky to be able to listen to the personal histories shared with us – and to wonder what people might be reminiscing about in another fifty years’ time across BCP!
