Junior & Young Writers: Week 4 - Making Zines

Hi Writers,

In this week’s workshop, we followed on from last time - looking at, and creating our own Zines!

For our check-in, we described our week as a type of Musical Instrument. [quite a few piano's this week]

Some of our students had worked on their Zines from last week at home, and they presented them to the group.

  • Why the asteroid didn't hit - by Wilf the Great
  • Alien Kids - by Elsie
  • How to survive the robot war in 10 steps - by Henry R

We played a few warm up games, today we played 'The Play', where 3 group members became a theatre company, and the audience shouted out who the characters were and what the play was called. They then had to act out the scene. The audience gave reviews after.

Then we got on with planning and creating more Zines!

  • Rock Buddies - by Eddy
  • How to be a girl - by Anna
  • How to survive a zombie apocalypse - by Wilf
  • Wicked Theme Zine - by Indy
  • a secret project - by Noah
  • How to draw mine-craft TNT - by Evan
  • How to draw Digglet [a Pokemon] - by Henry J
  • Alien Glasses and Alien stories - by Elsie
  • Monster Sightings - by Hamish
  • planning stages - Henry R

We put some of these in a Zine library. Fantastic work! It looks like a few series are being crafted.

Young Writers:

For our check-in, we described our week as a type of Musical Instrument.

  • Daisy - magical mysterious music in a forest
  • Ava - a fingle-pipe - it takes 4 days to prepare and only works at weekends
  • Sonny - a piano, quite nice, in tune
  • Leo - an out of tune guitar played by Elton John
  • Georgie - A random pink square thrown at a tree
  • Poppy - a triangle, normally overlooked
  • Berry - 1 drum, dramatic but boring

This is what we are currently reading:

  • Daisy - six of crows
  • Ava - animal farm
  • Sonny - the picture of dorian grey
  • Leo - skandar the unicorn thief
  • Georgie - solitaire [heart stopper series]
  • Poppy - Jacks secret summer
  • Berry - cream buns and crime
  • Claire - the witches of Vardo

Time for warm up games. Today we played 'The Play', where 3 group members became a theatre company, and the audience shouted out who the characters were and what the play was called. They then had to act out the scene. The audience gave reviews after.

We also played 'Family Scene'. One group became a family of badgers, in a forest on fire. The other group became a family of houseplants, moving house. These became rather interesting story lines and performances from our artists.

After looking at some more examples, it was Zine Making Time

  • Emojis - by Berry
  • Coconut and the Portal - by Sonny [coconut is a rabbit]
  • How to Murder a tiny Mutant Goose - by Goose [Leo]
  • The Best Crisps - by Poppy
  • My Mind During Maths - by Ava
  • The Train of my Thoughts - by Georgie
  • How to identify and evil teacher - by Daisy
These were superb! And it looks like Zine-fever has taken over the class. Future editions planned and collectives are being formed. :)

We’re looking forward to having Frankie back next week, and seeing everyone for another writing workshop.

Keep reading, keep writing.
