Resolutions & Egg-and-Spoon Races

It’s 2026! After our writers all shared that none of them had anything exciting happen to them over the break, we launched into some fill-in fun! It was all about new year’s resolutions this time. We had resolutions to use Sainsbury’s over Tesco after the bakery had wronged our main character one too many times, promises to stop murdering colleagues, and an incident where meringue was dumped over someone’s head after too little mixing.

Ali pointed out that the date was 13/01/2026, and asked our writers to write about their hopes for the year using that as a format: 13 words in the first sentence, one word in the next, then 20, then 26.

Some writers hoped for the chance to be unequivocally themselves, and others wished for under 16s to have access to nuclear weapons. In response, a different writer hoped that wouldn’t happen.

Seeing as in the new year people always feel like they’re racing to be a new person, Ali had us finish up by writing a story about a race. Our writer of the week was Chloe, who gave us a great dialogue between a losing egg from an egg-and-spoon race and his therapist.
