This week we unleashed our imaginations on the Lighthouse Theatre itself, using the building, location and surrounding landmarks as inspiration for dozens of different stories.
First the Junior Writers were asked to imagine treasure at the Lighthouse. Inspired by an old photo of the theatre being constructed, they were asked to create a character who found themself on the building site, and found treasure. The resulting stories featured dragons’ eggs, Santa, a Lighthouse squishy toy, a battle between good and evil architects and a pet snake that’s a cross between an anaconda, a cobra and a python (an anacobrathon?)
The Young Writers groups warmed up using photos from the local area as writing prompts and then were asked to imagine they were successful screenwriters, working on a TV show set in and around the theatre. They used the Wheel of Fortune to decide a genre for their story. It seemed to land on dystopia, horror and fantasy quite a lot and the writers embraced the challenge.
This, then, is how we ended up with horrific three-legged monsters from another dimension, renegade grey squirrels invading Brownsea Island, a theatre over-run with obsessed Minecraft fans or ghostly floating heads and sentient liquid aliens. There was lots of great character work – we particularly enjoyed the am-dram group so obsessed with their production they ignore the apocalypse, and the found family of ghosts in the Dolphin Centre. We discussed the merits of happy endings, sad endings and cliffhangers, deciding how to wrap up our story. Some opted for a happy ending (everyone gets a pet dragon!) others for a big reveal or twist to keep viewers coming back for a second series.
The writers expressed themselves in a number of ways – through sketches and comic strips, newspaper articles, blank prose and script format. Several of them left the session with solid ideas for stories to write in their own time. Thanks to Ellie Grant for leading another inspiring morning at the Lighthouse!
