Oceanic and Sonnety

This week we started off with some sea themed writing prompts, Ali had 7 sea related things written on the board:

1. Starfish

2. Wood with words carved on it

3. Ambergris

4. A hat

5. Whale

6. Life saver ring with SS Titanic written on it

7. Spilt cargo

Choose a shell out of an oceanic box of wonder. The shells have numbers on them. The numbers correspond with the different ocean themed prompts

7 and 1 for instance - a starfish and a spilt cargo

The stories that came out of these prompts were interesting:

Weird days on the beach, eating sand and generally feeling bullied, then finding plushies and selling them on Ebay - Max

Being vomited on and covered in ambergris - Florence

Quote of the session ‘Crushed by my realization AND the weight of the shipping container’ - Dexter

Then we moved on to creating some sonnets. The young people went straight in with iambic pentameter, and the room was a buzz with 'one two three four five - how many syllables does ice-cream have'

We started by listing out what we associated with the theatre, see photos below!

Once both groups had done this, Ali chose lines from their poetry and combined the stanzas to create this:

A SONNET for the Mayflower Theatre

I walk into the theatre; find my seat

The lights go down. A tingling in my feet

The curtain opens and the lights go up

Packets rattle and people sip from cups

Spotlights appear on the curtain so red

Now in the brightness a performer treads

Actors rush to their places on the stage

Stating lines they’ve memorised, page by page

Acting, singing, dancing, costume, makeup

The whole world is here in the theatre, wake up!

The music wants you to get on your feet

So you can dance and prance around your seat

You’re seeing what has not been seen before

Now open the imagination door
