Adventure

We find ourselves on a sunny Saturday morning in Mayflower Studios, contemplating ADVENTURE. Ali is away this week in Dubai for their annual literary festival so we had Sue Edser leading the session.

Sue began the session by asking each group about adventures they have had, and what keywords sprang to mind. These adventures ranged from being lost in an unknown forest in Gosport to ding-dong-ditching and more.

Sue then revealed her adventure island and a box of props. Photos below! Sue asked each group to invent a character to be stranded on the island (we had Bob for the Junior and John for the Young group). The character had to use the props provided to get through the island and find the treasure. Props included: Umbrella, scarf, sword, broken aeroplane.

I felt that Sue’s drawing skills were above average, but the older group queried why the so-called ‘mountains’ looked like guacamole covered doritos.

The groups were then taken through Sue’s adventure PowerPoint, where we learned the ingredients and plot points of an adventure story:

Here are some of the stories conjured from questioning and interrogating the idea of the adventure story:

Milo wrote about a former Twin Towers employee witnessing the tragedies of September 11 and then going on a one man mission to discover the secrets of his ex-colleague and current terrorist.

Max wrote about one man's journey in the mountains, his main goal was to obtain a lifetime

subscription to Netflix

Freya wrote about being abducted by aliens and having to eat her way out of the goo

I wrote my own adventure story too; mine involved a man in a train crash who meets an injured bride-to-be on her hen do.

Here is to many more adventures like these
