What makes a good story?

This month we’re been encouraging some of our amazing Junior Writers to enter the BBC’s ‘500 Word competition’.

In week one we watched two short videos from competition judges with
handy tips on what makes a good story and things to consider to help make your
story stand out (originality, plot, character, language and enjoyment). Our
writers then chose two of the 25 competition's writing challenges – the first was
to create a story starting with “I’d waited such a long time for this moment …”
and the second was to create a story where a character could enter and
explore their own dreams.

Last week we continued with the writing
prompts, this time the writers were challenged to create a story about a library where
the books come to life. Lottie asked the group to think about two contrasting
genres in their story with some great ideas including Fantasy
v. Horror, Magazine’s v. Fiction and Children’s stories v. Biographies.

The second prompt was to write a short story using 5 random words as inspiration, with
each of us suggesting a few words. Cue a collection of weird and wonderful suggestions
from apple, Hades and football to cheese grater, torch and custard, with one
writer weaving together a tale including Hades, helmet, torch and cup. The
session finished with Lottie sharing the visual planning tool of the Story Mountain, to help with mapping and structuring a story. The writers then chose one of their earlier stories or themes and started thinking in more
detail about on their opening, the problem and what their resolution could
be.
