Junior and young writers week 1: Writing dreams
There was a lot of energy in the room as our writers met for the first time this term. The
bees were especially buzzy, the ideas were flowing and a few new faces were welcomed
into the fold.
We warmed up with some games and book recommendations. Then we began by
describing our last week as if it was bedding. For one writer, mock exams had created a
stone floor with no bed at all (rough week.) Another had pillows with a secret cake
compartment inside – much nicer.
This week we focused on writing about dreams in all their weird, nonsensical and symbolic
glory. The writing prompt was that a scientist had created a device that lets you enter other
people’s dreams – what would happen if you gave it a test drive?
In the Junior group, William created a creepy poem about a secret fort in your mind, and
Juno wrote a cat’s dream with a strong narrative voice. Alice chased an annoying boy and
dumped slime on his head and Elsie nailed a brilliant opening line with: Today I woke up
and entered a dream. Confusing, right?
The Young Writers also did not disappoint. Catherine came up with a cunning plan to
break into the scientist’s mind via his dreams, erase his memory and take credit for all his
work. Daisy created a sensuous, descriptive piece. Sonny’s writing was all about warped
reality and full of wordplay, with a pay-off line at the end that impressed everyone.
It was great to see such a strong start, with everyone sharing at least some of their work –
especially new members. As Claire reminded us all – this group isn’t about getting your
spellings right, keeping your handwriting neat and creating something perfect. We’re here
to have fun, unleash our imaginations and possibly create something amazing along the
way.
We can’t wait to see what the rest of the summer brings!
