What a week to be asked back to cover the Mayflower Juniors and Young Writer’s
groups – not only was the sun shining in Southampton but the theme for this week
was myths and legends – awesome!
It was great to see everyone again and to catch up on what they’d been working on
since I’d seen them last in November. Both groups started their session with “Fill in
Fun!” which was a thought-provoking way of getting everyone’s heads into the
session and focusing on the topic and its language. The results were hilarious and
featured some main character action from thingy’s, skittle, cheesepuffs, ice cream,
the fluffball of destiny and a speaking pizza!
We then moved on to think about all the items, environments, clothing and tropes
associated with stories of myths and legends. Both groups generated lots of ideas
and really delved deep into the world of goodies, baddies, castles and cloaks! Next
up everyone selected their own side-kick to join them in their very own mystical story.
The choices were a dragon, a mermaid, a phoenix or a fairy (including some very
beautiful ones hand-drawn by Ali).
Then quiet descended upon the room and everyone got down to work, creating their
own stories about how they were seeking to find the ultimate prize, the Rose Of
Destiny! The end results were absolutely fantastic and took us all on wild journeys
including ancient Greece another worlds. As always, there wasn’t enough time and
before we knew it our time together had come to an end, an array of colourful
stationery was packed up and just like that….they were gone (until next week!).
Writers of the week were Milo for the Junior Group and Melody for the Young Writers
group.
Thanks for having me and I hope to see you all again soon!
