Junior & Young Writers Week 5: Return of the Cupcake
This week, the cupcake character returned to the workshops in search of new and exciting adventures through zine-style storytelling.
In our Young Writers group, Sonny shared an atmospheric, deeply isolating piece titled Dungeon, about a man imprisoned for so long that he is gradually reduced to living like an animal. Sonny's writing demonstrated his skill at pulling the reader into the story and evoking strong emotions.
Claire then introduced us to the simple but effective structure often found in the Mr Men books, suggesting that this pattern could help shape new stories for the cupcake character:
The character profile
A single, one-dimensional character named after their defining trait, such as Mr Bump.
The problem
The character’s exaggerated trait creates an issue, misunderstanding, or inconvenience in their everyday life — for example, Mr Tall waking up grumpy because his legs are too long.
The journey or encounter
The character sets off on an adventure, attempts an ordinary task, or meets someone entirely different from themselves. For example, Mr Lazy is trying, and failing, to hold down a job.
The twist or resolution
A comical, often nonsensical event resolves the conflict, usually bringing the character back to where they started and sometimes leaving them with a lesson learned along the way.
To add another creative challenge, Claire offered the groups several Shakespearean lines, encouraging everyone to either include them directly in their stories or adapt them into something new. For example, 'these delicious delights have stomach-churning ends'.
The groups then set to work creating their own zines, with the cupcake taking centre stage in each story. Below are photos of everyone’s favourite pages.
