Finding Freedom

(Week 5 Recap)

Last week at Young and Junior Writers, we took inspiration
from the Lighthouse's latest exhibition, Freedom: Then and Now, and wrote all about freedom.

After getting their creative juices flowing with a quick
warm-up about their dream bedroom, the writers got stuck into a series of
freedom themed prompts. Rohan tasked the writers with exploring the idea of a
boat called freedom. They were asked to design and describe the boat, thinking
about who was sailing on it and where it was headed. There were plenty of
unusual boats set to take to the high seas, from giant paper boats to ships
with magical libraries. There was even one that provided an endless supply of
all the different cereals in the world!

Next, the writers were set the challenge of writing poems
using only a random selection of cut-out words. There were plenty of swaps and
trades taking place as the writers tried to find the perfect combination of
words. Across the three groups, there were a brilliant array of
freedom-themed poems, some fun and comical, and others moody and evocative. The
older writers then went on to write short poems and passages about freedom.

The work from this session will feed into a creative
commission for the Lighthouse’s Freedom Then and Now project which will be
unveiled after the half term.
