Fireworks Are Coming...

We’re back! After a spooky Halloween holiday, we welcomed the term back with a firework-centric fill in fun. Spontaneous combustion was a recurring theme, but we also had someone becoming the youngest ever person to be sentenced to mass murder in the UK, and a character saving their friend who swallowed a firework via Heimlich manoeuvre.

Ali asked our writers if any of them had ever been to a fireworks display, and got everyone to describe some of the scent memories. We came up with:

  • Cooking jacket potatoes

  • Mulled wine

  • Cordite

  • Candyfloss

  • Hot chocolate

  • Bonfires

  • Grass

  • Onions

We also discussed things which scared us about fireworks night, such as fear of loud noises and finding the situation too intense.

Our writers were challenged to think about fireworks as a metaphor, and to write a scene or script between a couple of people who had fireworks coming in their relationship - for example two people who were enemies about to explode on each other, or two friends who had either romantic or frustrated tension growing between them.

We had strangers at graveyards rudely asking how people’s fathers died - then saying “oh that’s fine then” when it turns out he was just old - a woman having complicated feelings for the murderer of her brother, and actual fireworks which kept upsetting the romantic tension between two diners.

Our writers of the week were Melina and Issy for their fantastic scene between two “friends”, one long suffering and patient, the other absolutely awful… which ended with a long overdue dressing-down.
