Theatre

We were back at Mayflower Theatre today, so Ali went all theatrical on us. The ‘Fill in Fun’ was a great warm-up exercise about Gloria flouncing onto a stage. The Junior Writers conjured stories about dogs, murder, and intergalactic pineapples. The Young Writers imagined peacocks, stuffed cats, and a lime prop that went wrong, with the writer winning Line of the Day: ‘It burns, it burns!’

The session's focus was scriptwriting, which is a great way to practice dialogue and screen directions. Ali gave the brief: one person was tired, another loud, and the third was considering murder. The group was encouraged to imagine it on the stage as they wrote.

The stories from the Junior Writers included:

- Three girls hide from an evil monster; they try to make an exit plan, but one dies.

- Three girls try to work out who the imposter is amongst them.

-Two girls trust a random stranger, nearly get murdered, but are then rescued by their dragons.

The stories from the Young Writers included:

- Being stuck in an Ikea store

- A noisy cleaner annoys some hung-over university students, and a murderer kills them all

- One person is hunting someone else and trying to kill them.

As the curtain call of the session, the Junior Writers were given a game of consequences, many of which surprisingly made sense (see photos). The Young Writers were asked to write a monologue with a character whose name was a type of fish and who was angry about something. We heard a character whose sister worked for the FBI, an anchovy who wanted to be renamed Sir Blob Fish, and a call centre worker. They all deserve an Olivier Award!
