Christmas

This years final session of ArtfulScribe Afterschool Club was packed with festive writing.

First up, writing a concept/script for a John Lewis style emotional Christmas advert!

By Neelesh:

Beginning- The young boy polishes shoes for a living for the rich people. Even on Christmas, he has to work as he needs money to feed his family. Middle- A man realises that he is working hard and feels bad for him. For this reason, he hands the boy £100, 000. End: The boy thanks him and goes home to celebrate Christmas with his family with a big Christmas dinner. Story: One kindness can help a family.

setting- Story takes place in England during the 1950s in a busy area
music: We Wish You A Merry Christmas

[SQUIGGLEVISION]

(basically it's a 2d form of animation where the lines squiggle and undulate even when nothing is going on)

[In a cozy living room with a snowy garden outside]

[In the 60-80s]

“White bear, where is everyone?” said the boy as he knelt down beside the sulky polar bear.

“They all left. They don't want to play anymore.” the bear replied with a sullen pout.

“But there were so many, surely they must be somewhere,” confused, the boy rubbed the bears back in pity.

“Look over there,” both the boy and bear lifted their heads, in the corner of the room by the fire the brown bear sat with a book, reading aloud to a group of girls laying on a blanket, who giggled to the bear’s words.

“And over there,” outside they saw the black bear, rolling around with a group of boys as they wrestled in a big playfight.

“And I'm all alone,” the bear let his head back down.

As the bear slowly dozed off, the boy decided to gather everyone around him, and they embraced him into a warm hug.

[The ad ends with the bear hugging everyone back, infront of the christmas tree.]

And second, three little Christmas prompts for the holidays - including a poem in the shape of a Christmas tree (one word first line, two words second, etc) and a letter/diary from an elf!

By Leo:

Dear

Christmas Tree.

Did you see

me make hot cocoa

and drink it by myself?

Did you see yourself in me?

Do you know that you’ll be gone?

Come February and I can’t even think where

you and your branches might be, rotting away peacefully.

Perhaps you’ll find friends in rats and mice.

Goodnight dear Christmas Tree, maybe they will burn you.

To Santa

Not a moment's peace for us poor folk, being worked so hard all day long.

The rail pods broke down too! How am I meant to get around this under-funded spider’s nest!?

“Oh you need to go to sector C to deliver a message to the packing elves. I expect this to be done immediately.”

Oh well do you wanna know what I expect to be done immediately?

I want you to lift the austerity off of my poor hat.

How can I be expected to run around on my short little legs, in a place that was built for humans?

How about you tell the ‘packaging elves’ in ‘sector C’ yourself?

We have names you know?

We aren’t just these little toys that’ll do whatever you want us to!

will not be here next year unless you fix this work environment and fund us properly!

Sincerely,

A Very Fed Up Elf (Sector F Elven Resources)
