Far Away - Script Writing

Our end of year showcase is coming up on 9th July so in preparation for our young writers performances and readings we thought we’d do a little bit of script work. As a group we read sections from Caryll Churchills 'Far Away’ and Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Network.

We discussed the ‘show and not tell’ elements of both scripts, what questions the audience would be left asking and how sometimes when a script is simple and clear it can get a lot more information across than you might think.

Our young writers took turns performing the scripts in the lighthouse’s Sherling Studio and then wrote their own scripts using only 2 characters.

Having the theatre this week was really useful for getting our creative juices flowing and putting ourselves in the shoes of the audience when performing our work.

Churchill’s Far Away seemed to be the favorite script of the day. The questions left unanswered at the beginning left the writers coming up with theories of what was going to happen next,

Aliens, kidnappings, time travel etc.. Using just 2 characters and 1 room Caryll Churchill communicated so much with just words. Barely any stage directions, aside from a glance at the bottom of a foot.

We’re very excited to see how our writers use what they learnt today in future stories and scripts. We can’t wait to hear them.
