Memory

We were on our feet to start the session! Ali had everyone get up and memorise a bunch of objects beneath a scarf at the front of the room, before covering them and getting our writers to jot down what they could recall. Everyone remembered all the tchotchkes shown (a malachite cube, a toy fox, a police lanyard, a small lighthouse, a sequined beret, sunglasses, and a slinky), and then Ali got our writers to create a little poem from the list - one of which is included at the end of this blog.

The theme of the day was memory, and the group talked about childhood memories and how they structure what we believe. Ali gave us all a worksheet to write down our first snapshots of certain places/events, then we went around the table discussing what it was we remembered. The discussion turned into a quite long and interesting one and it was fascinating to hear what had stuck in the minds of our writers from their childhood! For the rest of the session our writers were set a task of writing a scene from the perspective of a character who opens their door to a neighbour who has lost their memory and is asking to be reminded of their relationship - how would your protagonist react? Our writers gave us long lost loves, people hiding from the police, and references to the childhood memory of forgetting to put flour in cookies.
