Junior & Young Writers: Week 9 - Greek Origin Stories - Spring

Hi Writers,

This week, we explored myth and season. With the story of Persephone and Hades as our inspiration, we analysed how stories shape how we see nature, change, and even ourselves.

To begin, we asked: What would it be like if your week was a planet?

We had plenty of unique answers, from gaseous atmospheres to fruit-shaped orbs. Here are some of the inventive planets our writers described:
  • Planet Titan—a great week, though slightly gassy, thanks to a veggie-eating campaign at school.
  • Pluto—linked to the Roman god of death. He fell out with a friend, but they came full circle, just like Pluto.
  • A lush, plastic-free planet—she's an eco-warrior at school.
  • Venus—hot, intense, full of rage (and stuffy classrooms).
  • A planet from another dimension that disappears and reappears—a strange, shifting kind of week.

Next, we explored an image: two figures in different settings. One seemed to make a flower grow; the other, surrounded by darker colours, looked on. The group thought about who these characters are, where they are and what is happening? The interpretations were creative and, as always, entertaining:
  • A different dimension where a prank has gone wrong.
  • A nymph and a hero—separated by time or fate.
  • A boy in prison and a girl at home, thinking of one another.
  • A lone traveller on a barren, corpse-strewn wasteland, digging through mud and death to unveil spring.
  • A strange off-brand land-dwelling Ariel and a man with a weird beard.

Drawing inspiration from the myth of Persephone and the structure of origin stories, each student created their own tale to explain spring, seasons, or the changing world. Some prompts included thinking about who made the world, where the creators are now and whether evil is necessary in this world? Here's a glimpse into some of their brilliant creations:
  • Eddy: Hermes has stolen a quarter of Hecate's potions, causing global imbalance.
  • Henry D: A tale of two sibling gods—Ronny and Ronny-Anne—who influence the seasons.
  • William: Little gnomes who work behind the scenes, changing the seasons like stagehands.
  • Wilf: A tyrannical god who brings winter when he attacks the world, and summer follows his retreat.
  • Hamish P: Two twins drink magical potions during a fight, accidentally creating the seasons.
  • Daisy: In a magical world, people's actions affect the seasons—when 'Laura' cuts her fringe, she creates winter. As it grows back, so does spring.
  • Georgie: A divine family drama—two sibling gods fight and throw the world into chaos. Their mother restores balance by giving each their own season.

From planets reflecting moods to myths re-imagined with potions, haircuts, and gnomes, the group brought humour, spirit, and originality to every task this week.
