Junior & Young Writers: Week 2 Comic Book Writing

27th of September

Week 2: Comic Book Writing

Building on last week's session, all about dialogue, we took the skills and inspiration from last week and delved into writing our own

comics

How we started things off, describe your week as a bug:

Henry: Venus flytrap with no food- boring and slow!

Juno: Tiger Beetle- drawing tigers and learning about them

William: Chameleon bug- a brand new cast on his arm!

Hamish: pond skier- lots of swimming

Eddie: Cranefly- an infestation of bugs in his school

Catherine: house centipede

What are you reading?

Eddie: Humble Pi by Matt Parker

Catherine: Good Omens by Neil Gaiman

Georgie: The Court of the Dead by Rick Riordan

Warm up 1: Buzzy Buzzy Bees

Warm up 2: choose your own adventure story

For this, we started by writing a seemingly normal story, then gave the characters a choice of

What to do next, one choice would lead to- certain death, for example and the other choice

would lead to discovering the truth behind ‘cake cult’

We then moved on to our comic book creations!

Before we started writing, we asked ourselves what to use to create a comic book?

● Onomatopoeia

● Dialogue

● Consistent theme (colours, fonts, design, language)

● Speech bubbles

● Thought bubbles

● Motion lines (the squiggles to indicate movement)

We then had a go at writing our own comic books (check out the photos!)

Everyone spent time writing a script and embellishing their storyboards. It was a lovely morning full of creativity!

One comic referenced cheese on legs and cake cult, running jokes/ lore and they both played a big part in some of our comics

book creations.

Keep writing!
