Junior & Young Writers Week 7: Science Fiction

This week we blasted off into the world of Science Fiction.

To warm up, the groups wrote stories about an AI being ordered to jump out of a spaceship... only it really didn't want to.

One AI tried to bribe its way out of the task with the promise of sweets. Another begged for mercy but couldn't escape its fate. Meanwhile, the beloved game show starring audience favourite Johnny Green was challenged to persuade an AI to launch itself into space.

For our next exercise, we imagined humanity returning to Earth after leaving it hundreds of years ago. Having explored the solar system for generations, these explorers stumbled across a strange blue planet, completely unaware that it was their original home.

The groups came up with some brilliant ideas. One story described humans discovering dirt for the very first time. Another followed a brave explorer who finally encountered the legendary beast... the cow.

In another timeline, humanity had spent so long living inside an abandoned airport that no one had ever seen or even heard of a plane. Perhaps they were the descendants of those left behind when the final flight escaped.

The stories that followed were wonderfully imaginative. Aliens landed on Earth only to become much-needed Costa baristas. A character named Cod had completely misunderstood the wisdom passed down through generations and was convinced his home was called 'Planet Dirt', where it was highly recommended that you stare directly into the sun.

To finish the session, the groups imagined mysterious laboratories where anything could happen.
One scientist proudly unveiled a terrifying monster that let out a terrifying 'meow'. Another laboratory was busy investigating one of science's greatest unanswered questions: can beans go to space?

Both groups managed to balance the bizarre with the brilliant, creating stories that were funny and inventive.
