More Collages & Sudden Shocks

We began with some fill-in fun, our writers putting the protagonists of Demelza, George and Bobby into a variety of situations: witches performing spells in anti-magic zones, a collision with a lorry carrying helium balloons which ended in two counts of accidental manslaughter, and a pink goose letting out delighted honks.

Today was a session of two halves - some of our writers did their character study last week after making collages, and others had yet to start! The plan is to work towards a table read at the end of the semester, writing a script for these characters who have been brought together in some sort of strange situation.

We discussed things which bounce us out of out groove: being in a car accident, sudden shocks - things which make you a little surprised that they happened to you. It’s this sort of feeling we want to encapsulate for the characters at the table read, being in a situation they really didn’t expect.

After everyone had a character - new additions included a doppelganger for a Croatian telemarketing star, a nuclear bomb harbourer, and a woman who’s hiding the fact that she’s French - the writers participated in a lively discussion about where their characters could meet. A lot of very good ideas were tossed around, but the one they ended up going with after a short writing exercise was a jury duty room where five out of the twelve participants had been found unconscious, and the rest were left to figure out what had happened.

It’s shaping up to be a wonderful close to the end of the semester, and the writers really showed us their talent this session!
