Moomin Stories and Hollywood Pitches

Saturday 20th January 2024

Juniors:

Today we watched Moomins: The Invisible Child, an animation based on a beautiful children’s story about what makes us feel invisible and how to be more visible ourselves.

While watching the show the writers wrote some beautiful stories about what it might feel like to be invisible and how in real life and fantasy, that invisibility can be cured.

Young Writers:

This week, we returned to the final frontier, as our young writers received a letter from a certain Holly Wood

Hello! I am a representative of Poole Lighthouse Productions and have been told that you are a group of very imaginative and talented writers.

We would like you to come up with, and pitch, the next film for our award-winning and hugely popular INTERSTELLAR VOYAGER series.

All the writers, split into different teams, were given details about how the previous film ended, and some of the plot threads/characters that might continue in their movie. They were also given some specific tasks (like ensure that there were a bunch of cuddly merchandise-friendly characters in the narrative). The teams had fifteen minutes to come up with an initial plot summary –

After pitching their ideas to us – and boy were they great! (We had twists and turns, explosions and mayhem, and lots of inspired cuddly characters), each team were given 1-2 notes:

  • Unfortunately our lead actor is unable to reprise their role, so we’re going to have to recast. Please come up with an in-universe reason why their face has changed.

  • Sadly we are no longer able to film in Antarctica or the Amazon, so will be filming in Slough instead. Rewrite the film accordingly.

  • Our lead character’s father is not who she thinks he is – who are they instead?

  • Time-travel is very in at the moment. How can we include that in the plot?

Each team had another ten minutes to address their note within their outline and pitch, before we heard them again – and saw some of the brilliant images our writers have created to accompany them.

Finally, we asked our writers to each write the script for a post-credits-scene, which could either set up a future film in the franchise, or offer a final laugh-out-loud moment for their audiences and readers.
