A pair of decorative clogs

Welcome back to the blog for ArtfulScribe’s
writing group for 15-18 year olds, Writing for Stage and Performance.

***

This Tuesday’s session began with the
following prompt to warm us up:

Describe your previous week as a
pair of shoes, and choose a song to go with them.

Our responses included:

  • Non-waterproof trainers that get
splashed by a puddle / ‘Raining Blood’ by Slayer.
  • A pair of decorative clogs / ‘Sweater
    Weather’ by The Neighbourhood.
  • Too-new shoes that scratch at your
heels / ‘Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy’ by Tchaikovsky.
  • Practical, plain shoes appropriate for
any terrain or occasion / ‘Whole Wide World’ by Cage the Elephant.
  • Dark-coloured Doc Martens with
spikes jutting out of them / ‘Purple Rain’ by Prince.
  • New favourite boots /  Lo-fi study music.

Choose an item / inanimate object
from your bedroom and freewrite from its perspective for 5 minutes – is the
object proud to be what it is, how does it feel about humans and what would it
do as one?

Our objects included:

  • A Dungeons and Dragons figurine preparing for battle
  • A Build-a-bear frog content with its
    life
  • A laptop who begs its owner not to
    procrastinate
  • A lost thing realising it’s about to
    be discovered

Choose one of the people from the
newspaper cuttings pictured below. Name and age them, give them 2 hobbies, 2
fears, a life goal, and write how they’re feeling today and how powerful they
feel in the world.

Using these characteristics, freewrite
from their perspective for 10 minutes.

We wrote about:

  • Rebecca, painting a seaside view and
    obsessing over organic materials
  • Charlotte, who is in chains and
about to be swept up by the sea
  • Robin, being introspective about the
    true nature of a gentleman
  • Maia, as she fires her employee
    Louisa
  • Helena, whose nail snaps off while
    she’s playing squash
  • Vivian, cancelling meetings to catch
    a flight to Australia

Finally, follow the ‘I’m a Writer,
Get me out of Here!’ instructions pictured below.

(If you would like to follow in our footsteps, put on some jungle sounds as you write.)
