Feedback

Today we had Sue from the weekend group leading us! We started off with picking a Starburst randomly out of a packet, each colour corresponding with a different question so Sue could get to know the group better. We then discussed what makes us a better writer and settled on: reading more, writing more, and feedback! This launched us into the theme of the day, which was discussing how to give and receive feedback.

The group had a discussion about what makes good feedback and came up with a mindmap for things that are effective and ineffective - though generally our writers agreed they preferred giving feedback than getting it. After we had a few notes to go off, Sue introduced the idea of a feedback burger: sandwiching a suggestion of improvement or development between a ‘bun’ of what we loved and what we are looking forward to.

With this in mind, Sue set our writers a task to create a short piece of work which we would then feed back to each other using what we have learned. We came up with the structure of what we would write as a group, once again using the Starburst method with each colour representing a factor:

Red - character trait - paranoid

Purple - setting - field, daytime

Green - goal - to find their way home / save someone (even if it was themselves)

Orange - obstacle - nobody got an orange! This was left as a choice for the writer.

We decided to feed back as a group, and everyone gave great feedback to their peers - being kind to each other but offering solutions to anything they noticed. It was a thoroughly useful session!
