Soft-boiled egg

This week’s session of Writing for Stage began with a
freewrite from the prompt “whenever I see it, it reminds me of…”.

Next, we read a monologue from ‘Chaos’ by Laura Lomas
together and discussed our ideas about where we think it is taking place.

We then did a 10 minute monologue writing exercise, thinking
of a memory involving an object and retelling it, focusing on the imagery of
that object. Amelia’s was a photo from a past relationship, Libby’s a swing in
the garden during summer, Katie’s a bag she was clinging to, and Lydia’s a
soft-boiled egg that ruined an egg-and-spoon-race.

After a short break, we read another extract from ‘Chaos’ –
a duologue where one of the characters is bouncing a ball. We then read it
again, this time improvising stage direction to indicate how we were using the
ball throughout (passing it between us, throwing it into the air, breaking it
into pieces!).

Inspired by this activity, we revisited our monologue and
added a second character, turning it into a scene, who engages with the object
in a way that adds tension, drama, or rhythm.

Writing for Stage returns next week.
