A Is For...

Juniors - 10 Young - 13

Did you know that giraffes don’t have their own sound, they just mimic what they hear? That was the coolest fact we found out as we went around introducing ourselves at the start of this new term.

It was good to see new faces mixing with the old, and Junior Writers moving up to Young Writers.

To get the creativity flowing, and learn each others names, we played the alphabet category game.

The rules are simple, for each category come up with an answer beginning with the letter picked for that round. If you have a unique answer at the end you get two points, if someone else has the same answer you both get one point, and if you failed to answer or answered incorrectly you get no points for that category.

The categories were animal, boy’s name, girl’s name and colour for Junior Writers, with the additional category of country for Young Writers.
The Junior Writers found Hannahs and Harrys, Hippos and Horses, Hot Pink and Hessian for H. Polar bears, Poppys, Peters and Purples for P, and Leos, Lilys, Llamas, and Limes for L, alongside a whole host of other answers.

The Young Writers came up with Coraline, Caspar (Caterpillar for Prime Minister - go back to blog post Pet Prime Ministers here for that reference), Canada goose, charcoal grey and Czech Republic for C. For B there was Ben, Bella, bat, Bolivia and blurple - which was google fact-checked as a real colour, a mixture between black and purple. What didn’t pass the google test was C for clear and colour mix was also shouted down.

The Young Writers collectively vetoed the letter Z when it was pulled out of the hat, but as they started discussing the possibilities realised it was more attainable than they first thought. However, many didn’t think they would have completed the categories solo, so a moral to that story could be teamwork makes the dreamwork.

This game was also a sneaky generation game. Everyone now had two named characters, and other key words to weave a story out of.

The Young Writers then rounded out their session with a lively game of Don’t Say Yes or No.

This promises to be an energetic term, I can’t wait to see the work we produce.
