Mayday, Mayday!

Spring is in the air, and a new term has begun! In celebration of the season, Ali got our writers to begin their first piece of the term with the phrase “mayday, mayday!” - either in its original usage for ‘help’, or in any other way our writers could think of.

After a some writing and sharing, Ali discussed what a typical May Day celebration might include: Morris dancing, children weaving a maypole, crowning a May queen. She then got our writers to move their piece of work into a new scene, where their character was now at an actual May Day event. How would the story change? What developments would there be?

To finish the evening, Ali had us write a little May Day rhyme which children could sing as they danced around the maypole. Something which, on the surface, is very sweet, but actually had an edge to it.

It was a very seasonal session and a wonderful start to the term - and we wish all of our writers good luck in this exam season!
