Junior & Young Writers Week 1: Alien Encounters

First week back after half-term, everyone was full of energy and very enthusiastic about this week’s theme: alien encounters. True to theme, everyone had to describe their week as a UFO, which ranged from “a UFO that sucks up personal documents,” to “a gerbil-run UFO” and “an invisible UFO.”

To warm up, the junior writers did buzzy bees and the young writers came up with random words that they had to make into a title to base a short story on.

Frankie then read out some examples of real-life alien sightings for inspiration. Subsequently, the writers were asked to write several short stories, first from the point of view of the abductees, the aliens or the investigators, then write the same story from “the opposite” point of view. Everyone had some very imaginative, and often hilarious, ideas, such as: “human medical examinations,” “evil alien who’s very hungry,” “alien telling off humans for ruining their own planet and then attacking friendly aliens,” and many others!

Later, they were asked to write a story imagining what it would be like to wake up Christmas morning with an alien in your house, paying close attention to potential cultural differences/traditions the alien might have. Again, the ideas were plentiful, from “spaceship talking to your tree” to “opening a suspicious box and subsequent illness”, as well as a lot of disgusting Christmas food.

The final exercise was to design and draw/explain your own alien. The young writers had some great ideas, as can be seen below. Unfortunately, the junior writers ran out of time, but were encouraged to continue at home.
