Autofiction

Last week, the group focused on memoir writing by using their childhood shoes as an entry point to explore a part of their life journey. This week, we took that a step further by exploring autofiction, which combines a person’s real-life characteristics, relationships, and experiences with elements that are imagined or invented. We looked at how this differs from other forms of writing, its key features, and some authors who have written autofiction.

We used Esther Perel’s Where Should We Begin? cards, which include statements such as ‘I owe an apology to…’, ‘My favourite love story to tell is…’ and ‘I can’t believe I got away with…’ I invited the women to choose one card that resonated with an experience that they wanted to write about. Some chose to write in the first person, while others preferred the third person, and we discussed the differences between them.

For the second part of the exercise, I asked everyone to continue their writing but to change the scenario's outcome or the events that occurred. As an example of how this could be done, I read some of my own writing, drawing on real-life experiences combined with fictionalised events. You can read this here.

Everyone shared how their writing had developed by changing some facts into fiction. Again, we discussed how writing in the first and third person brought something different to their writing. Experimenting with autofiction allowed the group to explore how this form could help them create new stories.

We concluded by discussing how writing fits into their weeks and agreed to talk about this further. Everyone said they were keen to explore writing techniques, so we will dive into that in the next workshop. See you there!
