Junior & Young Writers Week 4: Korean Urban Legends

This session focused on Korean Urban Legends: Horror Edition, kindly facilitated by Melissa. To begin, the group described their weeks in the form of a ghost. We met ghosts who grew annoyed if they didn’t get enough attention, a Santa-and-reindeer hybrid ghost, and one extremely chatty spirit.

After some warm-up games, Melissa introduced the group to several Korean urban legends, including the Water Ghost and the Blue or Red Toilet Paper Ghost. The first writing exercise invited the writers to take familiar idioms and reimagine them as urban legends, with phrases like 'we’ll burn that bridge when we come to it' taking on much darker meanings.

Next, the group explored an encounter with the Toilet Paper Ghost before moving on to the final prompt: the Elevator Game. This legend involves following a precise set of instructions to reach a hidden and dangerous floor. The writers invented their own versions, complete with elaborate rules and unsettling consequences - sometimes terrifying if the steps were done wrong, and occasionally just as bad if they were done right.

Thank you to Melissa and the Forest Arts Writers. It’s always a joy to experience everyone’s creativity and imagination. See you next week.
