Junior & Young Writer Week 1: Tall Tree Tales

Welcome back, Junior and Young Writers! While the weather may have been dull and dark, this week’s workshop was full of colourful creativity. We were also delighted to welcome Claire back as lead facilitator.

For this week’s topic, we explored Tall Tree Tales.

After our check-in and warm-up games, Claire read an excerpt from The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, introducing the character Treebeard. Treebeard is an Ent (a tree-like creature), described as man-like and giant, with a 'sweeping grey beard'. Using Treebeard as inspiration, the groups were asked to create their own tree characters, describing:

*What they look like

*Their name

*What they want or like

*Whether they have a motto or saying

Some standout creations included a moss and mushroom covered being whose motto was 'I’m just a chill guy' and a guardian Ent with a 'thicket like helmet and millennia of knowledge'.

Before the session ended, the groups were given question cards and asked to imagine interviewing their creations. One vengeful Ent named Goliath gave particularly gruesome answers to his questions.

See you next time.
