Junior & Young Writers: Week 10 - Script Writing

Hi Writers,

This week, we stepped into the world of script writing where you get to decide who says

what, where the scene takes place, and how the story unfolds. It was creative, lively, and full

of energy!

Check-in: How was your week… as a theme park ride?

To get started, we asked everyone to describe their week as a theme park ride. Here are

some of the brilliant answers:

● Croc Drop

● Roller coaster

● A really long queue... but the ride ends quickly

● A fast climb followed by a big drop

Safe to say, it’s been a week of ups and downs!

Before we revealed the day’s theme, the Junior Writers were trying to guess what we were

doing. When they found out it was script writing, one shouted, “I’m very ready for this!”, and

they truly were.

Picture Prompt Writing

Next, we used a picture to inspire our first bit of writing. We asked:

● Who is the person in the picture?

● Where are they going?

● What is that creature behind them?

● Has it always been there and what is it going to do?

The Junior Writers had fun with this, lots of funny and imaginative ideas, including dragons

and giant millipedes. The Young Writers focused more on building worlds and creating

backstories. Their pieces were longer and had lots of depth.

Question: What makes a good script?

We had a quick chat about what’s important when writing a script. The most common

answers were:

● Character names

● Stage directions

Main Activity: Writing and Performing Scripts

Both groups were really engaged and full of ideas. Everyone was excited to get writing.

Junior Writers:

● Eddy: Sibling Fight

● Henry: Stone Age

● Evan: Ferny Crofts: Night 1

● Indie: Ella Blacked Out

The Juniors didn’t just write their scenes, they performed them too. The acting, timing, and

energy were brilliant. Everyone threw themselves into it and brought their stories to life. It

was a joy to watch, we could have handed out Oscars!

Young Writers:

Poppy: Comedy Apocalypse

Sonny: Epic Saga of Cheese and Legs

Daisy: Girls Playing Marco Polo (a romantic comedy)

Catherine: Documentary of Gus: Colosseum of Antarctica

This group had so many ideas, they needed more time to finish. Their scripts were full of

character, structure, and imagination. Even though they didn’t get to perform them this time,

it’s clear that these stories are ready for the stage. They had a lot to say and said it brilliantly.

Great stories don’t just live on the page, they breathe through voices, movement and

moments shared. And this week, everyone proved they have something powerful to say.
