Nature

JJunior Writers

Nature was everywhere today for our Junior Writers. Ali collected flowers from the verges on her walk to the theatre. The group tried to identify them, and together, we could name buttercups, daisies, and wild geraniums. Ali asked the Junior Writers to write about walking through nature, perhaps in a woodland by a stream. Sue found some nature music to inspire them, but it was never quite right, especially when mixed with the sirens and motorbikes outside. Each writer shared their stories describing birds, flowers, and waterfalls; there was even a bear in one! Then, Ali asked them to give detailed information about a specific flower. They chose one of the flowers on the table and considered the senses, describing how they smelt, looked and felt. The stories then progressed to have a twist, with some characters getting lost, dangerous things happening, and nature getting its own back. At the end of the session, Ali released the writers back out into the wilds of Southampton.

Young Writers

Today, Ali introduced the Young Writers to the world of nature by inviting them to take a walk in their imagination. She collected some wildflowers on her way to the theatre for inspiration, and Sue found a nature soundtrack to put on in the background. Now, in the zone, the talented Young Writers let their imagination run wild. They followed the initial brief, to write something sweet, and then there was no holding them back when Ali asked them to put in a twist and go dark. Every writer changed their gentle nature stories into a scary tale about rotting bodies, poisonous mushrooms, and carnivorous trees. Ali shared information about competitions they could enter, which would give them practice with writing to a brief, word count and deadline. Based on the work they produced today, each of them should definitely give it a go!
