Character Buffets & Letting Go

Ali began by giving our writers three little blank sheets on which to write a character profile: their description, name & age, and three facts to know. Once everyone had introduced the characters they’d made to the group, Ali collected them and laid them out as a “buffet”.

The next task was simple: come and collect three characters which weren’t your own. She explained that when your work is being developed into a show things are often taken out of your hands and you are no longer in control of things, so you have to learn to take a deep breath and let go - this was a trial run for the creative future of our writers!

With an ensemble cast picked, our group got to writing a scene. We had diabolical babies maiming psychopaths with cooking pans, and a defender of pigeons descending from the heavens to punish a bird-beater who was definitely not a lizard wearing Groucho Marx glasses. Our writer of the week was Issy with her tale of Lidl middle-aisle conspiracy theorists and Russian ex-hitmen encountering a calligraphy demon.
