Character Buffet

CHARACTER BUFFET!

Ali opened the session by sharing his experience of meeting the creator of Bob the Builder. He spoke about the process of creating characters and explained that, as a writer, you sometimes have to hand those characters over to a TV company, book editor, or other collaborators. Ali emphasised the importance of being comfortable with letting go, and trusting others with your creations. There is a lot that can be found by being open to change and letting your characters evolve.

So, this week we delved into character creation. Each participant was given 3 sheets of paper with these prompts:

Name & Age

Three things you should know about me

The groups got underway, eager to create complex characters, some of whom were related to previous work they’d done in the playcreators' plays for instance.

Once the character cards were made, Ali and I went around collecting them. We then got each person to select 3 cards (ones they hadn’t created themselves) and use the three new characters to write a story!

Max and Jevan worked together to write a ‘Clash of Clans’ inspired story, with their new characters.

Phoebe, Pippa and Sophie teamed up to create a story filled with gymnastics, sheds and a whole lot of attitude.

Kieron's character MP turns a character by the name of Bobby into a zombie after a fight in a haunted room!

Writer of the Week:
