Week 5: Stories of Gold

Everyone
seemed more than ready for half-term this week, with the descriptions of their
weeks ranging from “exploding dynamite” and “squeaky bats” to “long, empty cave
with cobwebs.” That being said, the sessions were full of humour and brilliant
ideas, as per usual.

The
sessions started out with quick games of Buzzy Bees, before literally delving
into pots of gold.

The writers
are currently developing their own short stories to submit to writing
competitions, one of which centres around gold. After looking at famous
gold-themed tales, such as Rumpelstiltskin
and El Dorado, the writers were asked
to jot down any words related to gold they could think of: valuable, shiny,
ancient, royal, hypnotising, powerful, intoxicating, precious.

The writers
set about designing one or two key characters in their story, including their role
in the story, their appearance, quirks, strengths and weaknesses, motivation, and
challenges.

The writers
were then ready to draft a letter from one of the characters, granting valuable
insight into the character’s voice, personality, and motivation.

The writers
also worked on writing the very first line of their story and a gold-themed
poem.

Some examples
of intriguing opening lines:

  • Elsie: “Wake
    up, Dad, get in the bunker.”
  • Sunny: The
    house gave way and tumbled wearily down the mountainside.
  • Eddie: “You
    could have killed him!” Correction: I should have killed him.
