Sugar and Spice

What are little boys made of?

Snips and snails, and puppy dogs tails

That's what little boys are made of !"

What are little girls made of?

"Sugar and spice and all things nice

That's what little girls are made of!

In this exercise we read the above children’s poem and chatted about how the poem made us feel about boys and girls, linking emotions to the concrete images.

Then on a board we wrote down as many emotions as we could think of. Next we translated these emotions into concrete images, there were usually two or three images per emotion.

We used this as a springboard into our own free-write. The remit was to write about what people are made of, so there was no divisive structuring around age or gender.

The exercise concentrated on finding imagery. We were free to use rhyme, rhythm, line breaks, repetition, or prose as our imagination dictated.
